Earth Week 2024

From the beginning, the Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA) has been committed to balancing construction and operation of The Toll Roads with the preservation of open spaces and wildlife habitat in Orange County. We have replanted native vegetation, restored habitats for threatened species, conducted scientific studies, removed invasive and non-native plants and improved waterways and creeks. Our innovative strategies, design, management and conservation measures have been recognized by the tolling industry, government entities, ecological organizations and educational institutions.

Our Mitigation Sites

TCA’s environmental mitigation sites make up more than 2,100 acres of habitat and open space in Orange County. These sites are preserved in perpetuity – meaning they will be protected for generations to come.

Award-Winning Environmental Programs

Live Oak Plaza Grazing Program

Due to the risk of wildland fires at various mitigation sites, TCA explored sustainable alternatives to reduce non-native plant species and wildfire fuel.

The cattle grazing program helps manage the 23-acre Live Oak Plaza Conservation Area, re-zoned to preserve open space near Trabuco Canyon. The program has shown positive results in terms of reducing flashy fuels and associated fire risks from the accumulation of non-native plant cover, while promoting a shift toward native annual species. Wildlife Protection Fence

In 2016, the Foothill/Eastern Transportation Corridor Agency (F/ETCA) worked in partnership with U.S. Fish and Wildlife, University of California, Davis and Caltrans, to design, plan, install and monitor a Wildlife Protection Fence along the 241 Toll Road to reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions and habitat loss. Post-construction monitoring has shown that this state-of-the art, award-winning project has reduced wildlife-vehicle collisions while increasing the use of the undercrossings by various animals, demonstrating the remarkable positive impact of TCA’s environmental efforts.
