This holiday season, we want your travels to be smooth—no surprises, no violations and no hassles. If you have guests visiting for the holidays or you’re planning to cruise the corridors in a rental car, here’s your go-to guide for driving The Toll Roads (State Routes 73, 133, 241 and 261).

Register Before You Drive
Registering your rental car or adding the license plate to your account before driving is highly recommended. Whether you have a FasTrak account or not, The Toll Roads offer easy ways to pay your tolls while driving a rental car. If you wait until after your trip, tolls may be billed via the rental company (and often with added administrative or convenience fees).
And if you return the car sooner than planned? Don’t forget to update your account and remove the plate to avoid paying tolls for days you didn’t have the car.

With an Account
If you already have a FasTrak account, with The Toll Roads or any other toll operator in California, you can easily add the rental’s license plate temporarily to your account, just be sure to include the start and end dates. By adding the vehicle to your account temporarily, each time you drive through a toll point, the toll will be charged to your account via your preferred payment method.

Without an Account
No account? No problem. You still have two options:
- Register the vehicle directly with The Toll Roads before driving to have tolls billed directly to your credit card. To do so, visit TheTollRoads.com, click “Pay Tolls,” select “Pay Tolls for rentals” and then enter your vehicle information. You can choose to keep your credit card on file for up to 30 days for future tolls. This option is only valid for tolls incurred on the 73, 133, 241 and 261 Toll Roads.
Some companies require drivers to pre-register their vehicles. Any trips incurred before you register the vehicle may be charged directly through the rental company after you return it.
- Pay tolls via your rental agreement with participating agencies. Many rental agencies offer to charge tolls conveniently through your rental agreement for a nominal fee. Additionally, some Avis and Budget car rental locations in California have certain vehicles equipped with FasTrak transponders that allow drivers to use any tolled facility in California. Renters will be charged the tolls incurred plus any additional fees outlined in the rental agreement.
Renting a car doesn’t have to mean extra stress when you’re driving The Toll Roads. If you plan ahead and properly register your rental vehicle, you can enjoy smooth travels this holiday season.
