Your Guide to Driving The Toll Roads with a Rental Car

Car keys in the ignition of a car

Whether you are borrowing a car or are driving a rental, learn how you can pay tolls on The Toll Roads and avoid receiving a violation. All tolls on The Toll Roads are collected electronically and must be paid online 5 days before or after driving.

With a FasTrak® Account

If you have a FasTrak account with any tolling agency in California, you can temporarily add the rental’s license plate number to your account. If your account is with The Toll Roads, make sure to include a start and end date for your rental.

Driving without temporarily adding the license plate number to your account may result in tolls and additional service fees billed through the rental company or a violation.

Without an Account

There are two ways to pay tolls for a rental car if you don’t have a FasTrak account – by registering directly with The Toll Roads or paying through your rental agreement.

Register With The Toll Roads

By registering with The Toll Roads, you can have rental tolls charged directly to your credit card. Once you enter the license plate number you will be directed through a process to have tolls charged directly to your credit card for all or part of your rental period.

Some companies require you pre-register your vehicle before your drive on The Toll Roads. Any trips incurred before you register the vehicle may be charged directly through the rental company after you return the car, according to your rental agreement.

Pay Via Your Rental Agreement

Many rental companies offer to charge tolls conveniently through your rental agreement. Additionally, some Avis and Budget car rental locations in California have certain vehicles equipped with FasTrak transponders that allow drivers to use any tolled facility in California for a nominal fee. Renters will be charged the tolls incurred and the convenience fee outlined in the rental agreement. To view a full list of rental car companies that offer this service, visit TheTollRoads.com.

Before you drive, please contact your rental company for specific information on their toll policies and for information regarding convenience fees that may be assessed after driving a tolled facility, including The Toll Roads.
