For nearly a decade, toll booths have been a thing of the past on The Toll Roads (State Routes 73, 133, 241 and 261). For drivers with a FasTrak® account, tolls are deducted seamlessly from a prepaid balance or charged individually to a credit card after their transponder is read at a tolling point.
While having a FasTrak account is by far the easiest and cheapest way to pay tolls throughout California, the Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA) — the Joint Powers Authority that operates The Toll Roads — focus on appealing to consumer preferences and making it as easy as possible for customers to pay. By using license-plate-based tolling, drivers without an account can pay tolls within five days before or after driving The Toll Roads at TheTollRoads.com or using The Toll Roads app.
But what does that mean for drivers who want to pay with cash?
Offering a cash payment option is necessary for drivers who do not have a credit/debit card, do not want an account or simply prefer to pay in cash.
In 2018, to improve the customer experience and utilize innovative solutions and technology, The Toll Roads partnered with PayNearMe to give drivers the option to pay with cash at participating 7-Eleven locations nationwide. Since then, the partnership has expanded to include more methods of payment and locations — toll payments and account replenishments can be done at more than 40,000 participating 7-Eleven’s, and nationally at all CVS Pharmacy, Family Dollar, Walgreens and Walmart locations.
How does it work?
Paying with cash at participating locations is easy:
- To pay a violation: If you received a Notice of Toll Evasion with a bar code on it, present barcode to the store clerk.
- To pay a toll: Visit TheTollRoads.com, click “Pay Toll Now,” follow steps, select “cash” on payment screen, receive barcode, present barcode to the store clerk.
- To replenish a FasTrak account: Log in to account at TheTollRoads.com, select “Payments” tab, choose cash, receive barcode, present barcode to the store clerk.
Customers who prefer to pay using a debit/credit card or Apple/Google Pay can scan the QR code on correspondence from The Toll Roads to quickly pay a toll, reload an account or pay a violation.
Please note, a convenience fee is added by PayNearMe to each transaction at the time of payment.

Why PayNearMe?
By partnering with PayNearMe, tourists, infrequent drivers and commuters alike have control over how they pay. Since January 2021, more than 283,000 payments have been made using PayNearMe. According to a recent case study, drivers from all 50 states and most Canadian provinces have used PayNearMe to make a Toll Roads payment at more than 3,500 locations.
Providing new, innovative technologies allows The Toll Roads to adapt to the changing needs and best serve drivers. TCA leadership is focused on improving customer experience, fostering innovation and introducing new technology as seen in the Boards of Directors adopted Strategic Plan.
